Peirce's influence on today's mathematical logic
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstract: Mathematical logic has two aspects: the syntactic aspect (which, for convenience, we can regard as including the deductive aspect) and the semantic aspect. Peirce’s main influence on today’s mathematical logic lies in his role in the development of first-order logic. Whereas the syntactic aspect of today’s mathematical logic comes to us from Frege, the semantic aspect can, in a reasonable sense, be traced back to Peirce. Existential Graphs and Thirdness 1
Robert Burch has, in A Peircean Reduction Thesis, made a major contribution to communication between what could be called Peircean logic and the more “traditional” approach based on the work of Frege, Peano, and Russell; we may call this the FPR approach. And in so contributing, he helps bridge gaps in understanding which may stand between those focusing on the semiotic, and those more committe...
متن کاملDefending Abduction
Charles S. Peirce argued that, besides deduction and induction, there is a third mode of inference which he called "hypothesis" or "abduction". He characterized abduction as reasoning "from effect to cause", and as "the operation of adopting an explanatory hypothesis". Peirce's ideas about abduction, which are related also to historically earlier accounts of heuristic reasoning (the method of a...
متن کاملPeirce's Contributions to the 21st Century
Abstract. Peirce was a precocious child, a 19th-century scientist who had an international reputation in both logic and physics, and a largely neglected philosopher in the 20th century. Peirce's research in logic, physics, mathematics, and lexicography made him uniquely qualified to appreciate the rigors of science, the nuances of language, and the semiotic processes that support both. Instead ...
متن کاملAssessing process performance with incapability index based on fuzzy critical value
Process capability indices are considered as an important concept in statistical quality control. They have been widely used in the manufacturing industry to provide numerical measures on process performance. Moreover, some incapability indices have been introduced to account the process performance. In this paper, we focus on the one proposed by Chen ~cite{Che:Stat}. In today's modern world, a...
متن کاملFixing Shin's Reading Algorithm for Peirce's Existential Graphs
In her book “The Iconic Logic of Peirce’s Graphs”, S. J. Shin elaborates the diagrammatic logic of Peirce’s Existential Graphs. Particularly, she provides translations from Existential Graphs to first order logic. Unfortunately, her translation is not in all cases correct. In this paper, the translation is fixed by means of so-called single object ligatures.
